Handmade Sweetgrass Basket

The coiled sweetgrass basket is an example of African heritage that was transported across the Atlantic by African slaves from the Windward or Rice Coast of Africa. The baskets, one of the oldest African crafts in America, began appearing in South Carolina during the late 17th century. The first baskets known in the Lowcountry (SC) were fanner baskets used for winnowing rice. The use of the baskets expanded to the planting and harvesting of cotton and other money crops. The agricultural baskets were made of bulrush, sweetgrass and split oak.

The basket making craft has been handed down from generation to generation and is usually learned during childhood. There are no set patterns so each piece is a unique work of art

Bocephus was the number one Labrador Retriever in the United States in 1992, earning him the prestigious Pedigree Award. He also defeated approximately 10,000 sporting dogs by virtue of sporting group wins & placements. He has many specialty show JAMS (Judge’s Award of Merit), his last being at the Miami Valley LRC in May, 1997 at seven years of age. He also has Specialty Best of Breed wins, one being the winner of the first Raleigh Durham LRC specialty, and multiple Specialty Best of Opposite Sex wins. All of these wins have been under some of the most respected breeder judges in the country, if not the world.

Bocephus was an excellent hunting companion. He completed his Junior Hunter title in 4 consecutive tests. He was a great marker and handled well on blinds. He was steady in a duck blind or on a dove stool. He was welcomed back to any hunt because of his good manners, fun loving spirit and excellent working ability.

On top of all of Bocephus’ achievements was his ability as a stud dog. He produced numerous champions and working dogs for the hunt test arena and the community. He sired Leader Dogs for the Blind, one of which worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. He sired a drug detection dog for the City of Birmingham, Alabama, that was responsible for close to a million dollars worth of drug seizures. He has produced a National Specialty winner and numerous hunt test titled dogs. His progeny are truly versatile Labrador Retrievers that exhibit great conformation and wonderful dispositions that are excellent representatives of the breed.
